The Wallet on the Bus

Last Tuesday, I was riding the bus home from school when I saw something under the seat in front of me. It was a brown leather wallet. I picked it up and looked around. Nobody was looking at me. The bus was crowded, and most people were looking at their phones.

I opened the wallet. Inside, there was an ID card, a bank card, a photo of a little girl and 2,000,000 đồng in cash. My heart started beating fast. That was a lot of money for a fifteen-year-old student. I was thinking about the new headphones I wanted. For a moment, I wanted to keep it.

But then I looked at the photo again. The little girl was smiling, and I thought about the owner. Maybe he needed that money for his family. Maybe he was searching everywhere for it at that moment. I knew what I had to do.

I got off the bus and walked to the nearest police station. My hands were shaking a little when I gave the wallet to the police officer. She checked the ID card and made a phone call. Twenty minutes later, a tired man in a work uniform ran into the station. His name was Mr. Tuan, and he was a construction worker. That money was his salary for the whole month.

When he saw his wallet, his eyes filled with tears. He shook my hand and tried to give me 200,000 đồng as a reward, but I said no. "You should buy something for your daughter," I told him. He smiled and thanked me again and again.

That evening, I told my parents the story. My mom hugged me, and my dad said, "Being honest is more important than being rich." I didn't get new headphones that day, but I felt richer than ever.
