Teaching My Grandmother to Use a Smartphone

Last year, my grandmother turned seventy. For her birthday, my uncle gave her a new smartphone. She was happy, but she was also a little afraid of it. "It is much more difficult than my old phone," she said. "My old phone only had buttons!"

That summer, I stayed at her house in Nam Định for two weeks, so I decided to become her teacher. Every evening after dinner, we sat together on the sofa with the phone.

On the first day, I showed her how to unlock the screen and make a call. It was harder than I expected. Her fingers kept touching the wrong icons, and the screen kept changing. Once, while she was trying to call my mom, she accidentally took a photo of the ceiling! We both laughed for a long time.

I learned to be patient. I explained everything slowly and wrote the steps in a small notebook with big letters. "You don't need to remember everything," I told her. "You can always look at your notebook."

By the end of the first week, she could send text messages. In the second week, I taught her how to make video calls. Her favorite moment came on a Sunday morning. She was sitting in the garden when my cousin called her from Japan. For the first time in two years, she could see his face. Her eyes were full of tears, but she was smiling.

Now she sends me a message every morning: "Good morning! Did you eat breakfast?" Sometimes she sends funny stickers, too. She uses the phone better than some of my friends!

Teaching my grandmother was slower than teaching a child, but it was more rewarding. She taught me something too: it is never too late to learn.
